Dr. G Yves Laflamme is an orthopedic surgeon who completed a sub-specialization in lower limb reconstruction surgery, joint replacement surgery (hip and knee prostheses), and trauma surgery (pelvis). He completed his specialty in orthopedic surgery at the Université de Montréal, before pursuing his sub-specialty at the University of Toronto under the mentorship of Professor Marvin Tile and Professor Hans Kreder. He has been practicing at Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur-de-Montréal (CIUSSS du Nord de l’île de Montréal) for 27 years and has performed more than 12,000 surgeries to date.

His interest in complex hip and knee cases has allowed him to develop internationally recognized expertise. He quickly became the go-to reference for many orthopedic surgeons in Quebec. His experience is unmatched in the field of revision surgery for problematic prostheses or prostheses complicated by fracture.

Surgical approaches

Always with the goal of improving patient comfort

Since the beginning of his academic practice, Dr. Laflamme has devoted a significant portion of his time to clinical research, with improving the quality of patient care as his primary mission. Through his creative spirit, he has developed several new surgical techniques that optimize clinical outcomes while minimizing complications. He also developed an innovative technology, the Y3 plate, specifically designed to stabilize fractures associated with hip prostheses.

Always with the goal of improving patient comfort, he was among the first in Quebec to use minimally invasive surgical approaches for joint replacements. In 2017, he implemented the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) program, which aims to reduce surgical stress in order to accelerate recovery for patients undergoing hip or knee replacement.

Academic background and distinctions

Dr. Laflamme is appointed Full Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Université de Montréal.

At a relatively young age, in 2018, Dr. Laflamme was appointed Full Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Université de Montréal. His clinical research has been presented at hundreds of congresses around the world, and he has published more than 130 scientific articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. He has received several distinctions, including the John V. Fowles Award in 2006, as Professor of the Year for the Édouard Samson Orthopaedics Program.

For two decades, Dr. Laflamme has remained a leader in the training and education of orthopedic residents and fellows who have come to complete a sub-specialty here in Quebec. He is actively involved in the continuing education of orthopedic surgeons at the national and international level. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Association des Orthopédistes du Québec, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
